The SAS Charter was introduced in England in 2014 with specific expectations on employers around: minimum conditions of employment; revalidation, appraisal and job planning; helping SAS doctors to feel effectively supported; opportunities for development; and involvement in management structures. It was soon followed by adapted charters in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. A SAS induction checklist, monitoring tool and implementation checklist sought to shore up commitment to the charter.
The SAS Charter aims to help SAS doctors with their development and ensure that they are properly supported in the workplace. The SAS charter was created by the BMA and NHS employers, in collaboration with Health Education England and the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges.
